John Darwin was
born 12 May 1922 and raised in Charleroi, PA. John enlisted
in the Pennsylvania National Guard on 3 February 1941 with Company D, 110th
Infantry, 28th Division. Two weeks later, the National Guard
was
inducted into federal service. On 18 October 1943, the 28th Division arrived in
England and then entered combat in July 1944 in France. The 28th Division
was honored to parade down the Champs D'Elysee in Paris to celebrate the
liberation of the city. Numerous battles followed and during the
Battle of the Bulge, Ardennes, John was captured on 17 December 1944 and
sent to Germany where he worked in a paper factory in Ammendorf, Germany
until his release on 24 April 1945. He was discharged on 3 September
1945. He married Shirley Kalinoski on
2 September 1967.
