GENERAL INFORMATION
Jacob Knappenberger, son of John Knappenberger and grandson of Conrad
Knappenberger of Westmoreland County, PA, was born 1 January 1814 in Franklin
Township, Westmoreland County, PA
and died 9 January 1898 in Mason County, West Virginia. He is buried
in Ward-Aten Cemetery in Leon, West Virginia. Information
sent by a family member shows Jacob's middle name to be Andrew. He first
married Hannah WALTHOUR, daughter of Jacob Walthour and Maria Barbara
Knappenberger, on 20 April 1837 in Westmoreland County, PA. Hannah was born about
1815 in North
Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, PA and died April 1850 in
Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio. Jacob and Hannah shared
the same grandfather, Conrad Knappenberger, making them cousins.
After moving to Ohio and West Virginia, some of Jacob's family changed the spelling of their name to KNAPPENBURGER
- this was not a formal change but he did use "burger" on a
number of official documents including his Civil War papers.
While most of his sons reverted to the original spelling of "berger,
one son -Solomon Holt- maintained the "burger" spelling. Within
the descendants of Solomon Holt, some families retained the spelling as
Knappenburger while others did not.
Jacob and Hannah moved to Ohio and settled in
Jefferson County, Ohio about 1849. Jacob and Hannah had three
children prior to her early death in April 1850. Jacob then married
Elizabeth GOSSETT, daughter of John Gossett and Nancy Crabb, on 6 June 1850
in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio. Elizabeth was born May 1832 in Jefferson County,
Ohio and died 2 March 1916 in Mason County, West Virginia.
Elizabeth is also buried at Ward-Aten Cemetery. Jacob and
Elizabeth (with their children) moved to West Virginia about 1857 where they were listed in the 1860 census for Hemlock, Jackson County, West
Virginia. Jacob and Elizabeth had ten children in all.
Elizabeth as a widow was living with her son, Matthias Knappenberger in
the 1900 and 1910 census in Cooper District, Mason County, WVA.
Jacob was 43 years old when he enlisted and served three years from
1862 to 17 June 1865 with the 11th West Virginia Infantry/Company I as a
Private during the Civil War. More information on his Civil War
service is available on the Veterans Page.

believe that she died between 1900 and 1905 in Mason County, WVA. 2. Frederick M.
Knappenberger was the
child of Mathias and Eureka and was born 24 March 1888

child of Mathias and Eureka and was born September 1890 in West
Virginia. She is listed as 9 years of age in the 1900

Kathryn had 3 children. Earl later
married Ethel Faye WHITTEN, daughter of Marvin Whitten and Dona Revis,
in 1993. Ethel was born 23 April 1943 in Illinois
and died 7 Nov 2009 in Alabama. The 1930 census
for Akron, Summit County, Ohio gives two household listings for Jacob
Knappenberger where he is listed in both households as 29 years of age,
born in West Virginia and working as a laborer for an ice company.
The one household has Jacob Knappenberger living with his wife of 1
year, Alice V., age 16, along with his sister, Alberta, age 13.
Also in the same city, Jacob Knappenberger is listed with his wife,
Grace, age 24, to whom he has been married for 9 years and their son,
George Knappenberger, age 4, born in Ohio living on North Cedar
Street. This leads to speculation that Jacob Waldrop was married
to two wives at the same time. Any information
clarifying this situation would be greatly appreciated! We
would also like to gain information about the George Knappenberger who
was born about 1925. 7.
