Centennial Quilt constructed by G. Knappenberger, who was probably Gertrude Wendling Knappenberger, about 1876 in Pennsylvania commemorating our nation’s 100th birthday.  It was exhibited at The Quilt Gallery, 19 East 80 Street, New York City; published in a calendar for the 1976 US Bicentennial; and remains in the Quilt collection at the Folk Art Museum of New York City.  Donna Marie Guzie Gilbert is a second great-granddaughter of Gertrude Wendling Knappenberger.  She is interested in learning more about Gertrude and specifically more about her quilts since she too is a quilter.  If anyone knows more about Gertrude and her quilts or possibly owns a quilt, Donna would like to hear from you!  You can reach her at guziegirl@verizon.net.

CHILDREN

WILLIAM WENDLING KNAPPENBERGER (1836-1904)

William Wendling Knappenberger was born 24 June 1835 in Berks County or Lehigh County, PA and died 30 September 1904 in Lehigh County, PA.  He married Isabella Susanna BREISCH, daughter of Benjamin Breisch and Lucy Keenly, on 7 February 1885.  Isabella was born 28 July 1846 and died 20 September 1930 in Lehigh County, PA. William is buried at St. Peter UCC Church Cemetery in Lehigh County, PA.  William married Isabella late in life at the age of 49.  William and Isabella had one daughter.

Before her marriage to William, Isabella Breisch had a daughter with her employer, Edward Anderson, named Lucy M. ANDERSON.  Lucy was  born 2 August 1876 in Lehigh County, PA and died 3 May 1956 in Lehigh County, PA.  She was buried in St. Peter’s UCC Cemetery, Macungie, Lehigh County, PA.  Lucy M. Anderson, daughter of Isabella Breisch Knappenberger and step-daughter of William Wendling Knappenberger, married John Franklin SNYDER, son of George Snyder and Eliza A. Ettinger, about 1899.  They had three children: Florence E. Snyder (born February 1899), Nelson John Snyder (25 July 1904-18 June 1935) and Mari I. Snyder (1909-2003).

We believe Lucy had a son named Leroy William HARTZELL prior to her marriage to John Franklin Snyder.  Leroy was raised by his grandmother, Isabella Knappenberger, and was living with her in the 1900 census as 4 years old and the 1910 census at the age of 14.

Leroy William Hartzell was born 27 May 1895 in Lehigh County, PA.  He married Mabel M. REHM, daughter of John Roehm and Malida Fetter/Feather.  This couple had two sons: Charles Ellsworth Hartzell (born 27 June 1915 in Lehigh County, PA) and William Benjamen Hartzell (19 March 1917- 27 February 1988).  These two young boys were put into an orphanage and eventually adopted.  William Benjamen was adopted by the Peter and Margaret GEBHARDT family and his last name was changed accordingly.  His adopted mother, Margaret, remarried to John Rupple sometime during the 1920s.  We do not know who adopted Charles Ellsworth.  We would like to learn more about the circumstances of these adoptions as well as the name of Leroy’s father and what became of Leroy William Hartzell.

After the breakup of the marriage between Leroy William Hartzell and Mabel Rehm, Mabel went into service for the Meitzler Family as indicated by the 1920 census and then by the 1930 census was a servant in the household of Victor M. Bianckini in Bethlehem, Northampton County, PA.  Eventually Mabel lived with Victor as husband and wife but they never married.  Mabel died 24 March 1946 and was listed as Mrs. Mabel Rehm Bianckini.
