GENERAL INFORMATION
Elizabeth Knappenberger was born 13 October 1803 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 11 March 1890 in Westmoreland County, PA. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Knappenberger (1774-1863) and granddaughter of Conrad Knappenberger of Westmoreland County, PA (1748-1818). Elizabeth became a widow at the age of 52. From a history of Westmoreland County it was written about Elizabeth, “The death of her husband devolved upon Mrs. Kline the care of the family. She was at that time a woman of great energy as well as mental strength, and now, when almost an octogenarian, her mind if not only unimpaired but bright as in youth. With rare tact, good judgment, and the exercise of the Christian virtues, she reared her family well, always commanding their love.” Elizabeth married John KLINE, Jr., son of John Kline, Sr. and Anna “Nancy” Buchman, on March 9, 1832 in Manordale, Westmoreland County, PA. John was born 1 January 1809 in Bouquet, Westmoreland County, PA and died 11 December 1855 in Westmoreland County, PA. John was a farmer and it was noted in the history of Westmoreland County, “He was a man of great energy and industry, and was noted for his unswerving honesty in all the business affairs of life.” From Vinnie Knappenberger’s family history of 1916 we learn, “Elizabeth and her husband lie buried in Denmark Manor Churchyard. Her descendants have remained, in most cases, true to the Reformed Church and most of them have remained in Westmoreland County where they have played important parts in almost every field of activity, a prosperous, contented, moral people.” Elizabeth and John had ten children.

HEZEKIAH JOSEPH KLINE (1832-1869)
Hezekiah was born in 1832 in Westmoreland County, PA and died in 1869 in McDonough County, Illinois. There is a grave marker for him at Denmark Manor Churchyard, Westmoreland County, PA although another source indicates that he was buried in Spring Creek Cemetery in McDonough County, Illinois. Hezekiah moved to McDonough County, Illinois in 1866 and started a lumber company. There he married Mary Ann PAINTER on 5 June 1867. Mary Painter was the daughter of Tobias George and Catherine Painter. She was born about 1847 in McDonough County, Illinois and died January 1887 in Kansas. After Hezekiah’s early death, Mary Ann remarried to Levi Elliott, M.D. Mary Ann and Levi had a son: Elmore W. Elliott. Hezekiah and Mary Ann had one son.
1. Clarence P. Kline was born 16 May 1868 in Sciota, McDonough County, Illinois and died after 1930. He moved to California with his mother and stepfather and later to Kansas and Missouri. He moved back to McDonough County, Illinois in 1897 where he took up farming. There he married Alice “Beryl” PAINTER, daughter of Francis Marion Painter and Sarah “Josephine” Kitch on 28 September 1898. Beryl was born 6 January 1882 in McDonough County, Illinois and died after 1930. Clarence and Beryl were first cousins on the Painter side. Clarence and Beryl had 8 children. a. Rhuanne Gladys Kline was born 7 October 1899 in McDonough County, Illinois and died 21 May 1983 in Tucson, Arizona. She married Archie James APPLEGATE (18 May 1900-25 November 1951) but this marriage ended in divorce. They had two children: Dorothy Isabel Applegate (16 September 1920-28 May 2002) who married Roy ANDREWS (1919-1995) and James Keith Applegate (28 September 1921-2 January 1999).
b. Corrine Valley Kline was born 2 March 1901 and died 16 January 1988.
c. William Elmore Kline was born about 1902.
d. Susie Kline was born 14 November 1903 and died May 1982. She married Henry HATCH on 21 March 1928. He was born 23 March 1904 and died 21 November 1996.
e. Peter E. Kline was born 24 November 1904 and died 7 March 1999. He married Josephine GRIGG who was born 26 November 1908 and died 21 December 1994. They had a son: Robert E. Kline (born about 1927).
f. Mabel H. Kline was born about 1907.
g. Mary L. Kline was born about 1911 in McDonough County, Illinois.
h. Margaret K. Kline was born about 1912 in McDonough County, Illinois.
HANNAH KLINE (1833-1880)
Hannah was born 18 November 1833 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 22 June 1880 in Westmoreland County, PA. Hannah never married. In the 1880 census, Hannah Kline is listed as 46 years of age, single, and living at home with her widowed mother, Elizabeth Kline, in Penn Township, Westmoreland County, PA. Hannah is buried in Denmark Manor Churchyard.
WILLIAM JOHN “W.J.” KLINE, MD (1835-1918)
W.J. Kline was born March 1835 in Westmoreland County, PA and died in 1918 in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, PA. He married Emma TINSTMAN, daughter of John Tinstman and Anna Overholt, in 1868. Emma was born August 1857 in Fayette County, PA and died in 1914 in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, PA. They had no children. The Westmoreland County History of 1882 states that Dr. Kline got his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and then entered Turner Lane Military Hospital as a cadet and subsequently completed his medical course at Long Island College Hospital and graduated in 1864. The Battle of Gettysburg was in progress so he proceeded to Harrisburg to pass his examination by the State Medical Board and was assigned to duty to attend a large number of the wounded that had been shipped to Harrisburg after the battle. He and Dr. J.S. King organized the Walnut Street Hospital which they ran jointly for nine months until the emergency was over. He eventually went into private practice in Irwin and then Greensburg, Westmoreland County, PA. In 1876 Dr. Kline was elected a member of the State Legislature and served in the sessions of 1877-1878.

NICHOLAS KLINE, DDS (1836-1915)
Nicholas Kline known at times as “L.N.” was born 1 November 1836 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 1915. He was a dentistry surgeon by profession and both resided and practiced in Scottdale, Westmoreland County, PA. He married Elizabeth BOICE on 17 January 1865. Elizabeth was born February 1844 in Greensburg, PA and died July 1911 in Scottdale, PA. The 1900 census indicates that they had been married 35 years at that time and no children were born to this couple. The 1910 census shows this couple living in Scottdale, PA. Elizabeth’s obituary lists no children.

MARY ANN KLINE (1838-1927)
Mary Ann Kline was born 8 November 1838 in Westmoreland County, PA and died September 1927 in Westmoreland County, PA. She married David L. SNYDER, son of Daniel Snyder and Elizabeth Rowe. David was born 9 March 1833 in Penn Township, Westmoreland County, PA and died 22 July 1906. This couple and many of their children are buried in Denmark Manor Churchyard. They had eight children in all.
1. Reverend Addison Calvin Snyder was born 9 June 1857 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 11 December 1905 in Westmoreland County, PA. He studied theology in Lancaster, PA and Tiffin, Ohio. He was pastor of Wills Creek in Glencoe, PA. He never married. He is buried at Denmark Manor Church Cemetery.
2. Elizabeth Ermina Snyder known as “Lizzie” was born 1 November 1859 in Penn Township, Westmoreland County, PA and died 28 April 1945 in Penn Township, Westmoreland County, PA. She was living with her widowed mother in both the 1910 census and the 1920 census and was unmarried. We have no record that Lizzie ever married. Lizzie is buried at Denmark Manor Church Cemetery.
3. Amanda Jane Snyder was born 25 October 1861 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 2 February 1933 in Westmoreland County, PA. She married George W. WAUGAMAN, son of Hezekiah and Catharine Waugaman, about 1886. George was born 12 July 1859 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 31 January 1943 in Westmoreland County, PA. This couple is buried in Denmark Manor Church Cemetery. Amanda and George had two daughters.
a. Emma Catherine Waugaman was born 4 October 1888 in Westmoreland County, PA and died on 17 April 1947 in Westmoreland County, PA. It seems that Emma never married. She is buried in Denmark Manor Church Cemetery.
b. Mary Elizabeth Waugaman was born 21 December 1901 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 8 December 1988 in Pittsburgh, PA. She married James Alfred PRINGLE, son of Samuel Wilson Pringle and Margaret Estelle Purdy. James was born 14 March 1901 in Pueblo, Colorado and died 20 April 1963 in Pittsburgh, PA. This couple is buried at Denmark Manor Church.
4. Reverend Henry Elmer Snyder was born 1 January 1864 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 1 June 1927 in Westmoreland County, PA. He graduated from Heidelberg College and the theological seminary in Lancaster, PA. Rev. Snyder is buried in Denmark Manor Church Cemetery. He first married Imogene May LONG, who was born May 1869 in PA and died sometime after 1920 in Michigan. This marriage ended in divorce prior to 1910. Henry and Imogene had three sons who moved to Wayne County, Michigan with their mother and grandmother, Maggie M. Long, by the 1910 census. Rev. Snyder later married Blanche DELAND sometime after 1910.
a. Cecil Le Roy Snyder, the child of Henry and Imogene, was born 24 March 1892 in Butler County, PA. He married Donna M. and was living in Chicago, Illinois in the 1930 census. No children were listed with them at that time.
b. Alpha Nicholas K. Snyder, the child of Henry and Imogene, was born 26 December 1893 in Butler County, PA. He married Adelaide [maiden name unknown] about 1919. Adelaide was born about 1897 in Michigan. By the 1930 census for Wayne County, Michigan they had two children: Adele M. Snyder (born December 1919) and Richard Snyder (born about 1923 in Wayne County, Michigan).
c. John David Snyder, the child of Henry and Imogene, was born 22 October 1897 in Butler County, PA and died June 1976 in Michigan. He married Margaret E. [maiden name unknown] about 1919. Margaret was born about 1896 in Michigan. By the 1930 census in Wayne County, Michigan they had 3 children: David C. Snyder (born 1920), Mary Margaret Snyder (born about 1922) and Theresa K. Snyder (born about 1928).
5. Emmaline Susanne Snyder was born 19 November 1865 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 30 March 1944 in Westmoreland County, PA. She married Edward Miles FRYE in 1891. Edward was born 3 July 1862 in Grapeville, Westmoreland County, PA and died 18 July 1944 in Westmoreland County, PA. They are buried in Denmark Manor Church cemetery. The 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses indicate that they lived in Monessen, Westmoreland County, PA. Emma and Edward had three children.
a. Ralph Wendell Frye was born 8 March 1891 in Westmoreland County, PA and died September 1977 in Los Gatos, Santa Clara County, California. He married Patricia SMITH. They had two sons.
b. Wayne Vernon Frye was born 17 September 1892 in Westmoreland County, PA. In 1930, he and his wife were living in Dormont, Allegheny County, PA where he worked for a bank. He married Ola McCLAIN about 1929. Ola was born 5 February 1890 and died September 1972 in Westmoreland County, PA.
c. Irene Marie Frye was born 14 October 1896 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 2 March 1983 in Houston, Harris County, Texas. Irene married Arnold Rudolph KERTH, son of Georges H. Kerth and Anna Margaretha Schwarz, about 1922. Arnold was born 9 September 1896 in Philadelphia County, PA and died August 1956 in Tonawanda, New York. They had two daughters.
6. Judge Daniel John “D.J.” Snyder was born 17 November 1867 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 28 June 1953 in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, PA. He married Esther Winifred FOWLES, daughter of Reuben Morgan Fowles and Orpha Ann Whitehall, on 22 October 1910 in Cannonsburg, PA. Esther was born 11 February 1880 and died 28 March 1970 in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, PA. They are buried in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg, PA. D.J. and Esther had two children.
a. Eleanor Gertrude Snyder was born 12 July 1912 in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, PA and died 15 February 2003 in Henderson County, NC. She married Fredrick Ernest RECTOR, Sr. who was born 12 January 1910 in Appleton, Wisconsin and died 12 January 1979 in Henderson County, NC.
b. Daniel John Snyder, Jr. was born 2 May 1916 in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, PA and died 11 May 1980 in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky. Daniel married Martha Valeria FLEMING, daughter of Rev. William Franklin Fleming and Charlotte Valeria Schoenfeld, on 8 April 1942. Martha was born 21 February 1916 in Allegheny County, PA and died 8 March 2010 in Nashville, Davidson County, TN. They are buried in St. Clair Cemetery, Westmoreland County, PA.
7. Anna Mary Snyder known as “Minnie” was born 18 March 1870 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 3 November 1896 in Westmoreland County, PA. She never married. She is buried in Denmark Manor Church Cemetery.
8. Nora Virginia Snyder known as “Jenny” was born January 1874 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 30 March 1941 in Westmoreland County, PA. Jenny married William A. MATTHEWS on 18 June 1936 in Jeannette, Westmoreland County, PA. She was a teacher in the Monessen schools. She is buried in Denmark Manor Church Cemetery.
HENRY KLINE (1840-1863)
Henry Kline was born 13 March 1840 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 2 March 1863 in New Bern, North Carolina. He served with the 168th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company K. Henry was drafted into service for the Civil War. Some of his friends volunteered to take his place; however, he said “No, I recognize this as a proper call of my country, and I will let no other perform the duty which belongs to me to fulfill.” Records for Denmark Manor Church Cemetery indicate that there is marker for him at that site. Henry was not married.
LYDIA ELIZABETH KLINE (1842-1923)
Lydia Elizabeth Kline was born November 1842 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 1923 in Westmoreland County, PA. She married Cyrus J. “C.J.” SNYDER, son of Peter Snyder and Lydia Rowe. Cyrus was born 9 December 1841 in Penn Township, Westmoreland County, PA and died on 1 February 1916 in Penn Township, Westmoreland County, PA. They are buried in Denmark Manor Church Cemetery. This couple had two sons both of whom became medical doctors.
1. Charles Elijah Snyder, MD was born 3 November 1863 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 12 November 1954 in Westmoreland County, PA. Charles graduated from Heidelberg College in Ohio with a bachelor degree and then entered Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York City graduating in 1894 with a degree of Doctor of Medicine. He opened a practice first in South Greensburg, PA and then moved to Greensburg, PA in 1896. He married Eva Jane CAMPBELL known as “Jennie”, daughter of Hiram Campbell and Mary Speigle, on 10 June 1897. Eva was born November 1876 in Mt. Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, PA and died 1 March 1941 in Westmoreland County, PA. This couple is buried in Westmoreland County Memorial Park. Charles and Jennie had two children.
a. Helen Mary Snyder was born 30 September 1898 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 8 April 1956. She married Meade WIANT, MD, son of Elias G. Wiant and Sarah Jane Stewart, about 1921. Meade was born 12 October 1889 and died 20 May 1963. In the 1920 census, Meade is listed as 31 years of age. In the 1930 census, he is listed as 40 years of age. In the 1930 census for Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA, Meade Wiant is a physician in general practice. Helen and Meade had two children: Patricia Jane Wiant (born 1922) and William Richard Wiant (born 1926).
b. Richard C. Snyder, MD was born about 1902 in Westmoreland County, PA. We have no knowledge about whether or not he ever married. In the 1930 census, he was 28 years of age, single, living in Bedford County, PA where he was a high school principal. Richard is buried in Denmark Manor Church Cemetery.
2. William John Kline Snyder, MD was born 24 December 1864 in Westmoreland County, PA and died after 1954. He graduated from Heidelberg University in Ohio and then took an additional year’s work at Wooster Medical College of Cleveland, Ohio. He then attended Bellevue Hospital Medical College graduating in 1895. He set up his practice in Avalon, Allegheny County, PA. He was a co-founder in 1904 of Suburban General Hospital. He is buried in Denmark Manor Church Cemetery. William’s first marriage was to Mabel Clair LUTZ, daughter of John and Clair Lutz, on 23 January 1897. She was born January 1869 in Tiffin, Ohio and died 1920 in Avalon, Allegheny County, PA. There were no children born to this marriage. William’s second marriage was prior to the 1930 census to Elizabeth [maiden name unknown] who was born about 1879 in Pennsylvania and died 1939. The census indicates that Elizabeth’s parents were from Ireland and that she had been married previously. William married a third time [wife unknown at this time]. His third wife died in 1947 according to the marriage license application for his fourth marriage to Mrs. Minerva G. SPENSER, a widow. He married Minerva Spenser in 1952 when he was 88 years of age and she was 60 years of age. He was still a practicing physician making house calls at that time.
AMOS B. KLINE (1843-1925)
Amos B. Kline was born 14 April 1843 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 25 August 1925 in Westmoreland County, PA. He graduated from Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie, NY and later became Associate Editor with the “Westmoreland Democrat” newspaper. He married Elizabeth B. KAYS, daughter of David L. Kays of Pittsburg PA, on 17 September 1889. Elizabeth was born September 1863 and died sometime after 1925. Amos is buried in Saint Clair Cemetery, Greensburg, Westmoreland County, PA. 1. Madaline Elizabeth Kline was born January 1892 in Westmoreland County, PA. She is buried in Denmark Manor Church cemetery.
2. Arthur Bernadotte Kline was born 12 June 1896 in Westmoreland County, PA.
REVEREND ALPHEUS KNAPPENBERGER KLINE (1847-1924)
Reverend “A.K.” Kline was born September 1847 in Westmoreland County, PA and died in 1924. He graduated from Franklin & Marshall College and then from the theological seminary in Lancaster, PA. He became a minister of the Reformed Church with churches in South Bend, Armstrong County, PA; Woodstock, VA and Grove City, PA. His first name is often listed as “Alpha”. Rev. Kline married Sarah JOHNSTON who was born January 1850 in PA and died in 1919. In the 1900 census, they are living in Braddock, Allegheny County, PA and in the 1910 census, Rev. Kline and his wife, Sarah, are living in Grove City, PA. In the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census, a niece, Dora S. Leerone, lived with this family. In 1920, Dora was 35 years of age and single. In the 1920 census, Rev. Kline is listed as a widow. This couple had no children.

JACOB KLINE (1849-1850)
Jacob Kline was born 2 May 1849 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 14 October 1850. He is buried in Denmark Manor Church Cemetery along with many others of his family.
