GENERAL INFORMATION

Henry, eldest son of J. Michael Knappenberger [immigrant], was seven years old when his father died.  In court papers of June 1762, Henry is listed as being over the age of 14 and his guardian was Jacob Waggoner.  In September 1765, Henry Knappenberger as eldest son petitioned the courts requesting an inquest into the estate of his father, J. Michael Knappenberger.  Henry’s name was on the tax list of 1772 as a farmer owning 300 hundred acres of land and a sawmill.  He was a private in Captain Adam Zerfass (Serfass) company of the Northampton County Militia during the Revolutionary War.  This unit was on active duty for 60 days of service during 1781.  In 1786, he was elected Captain of the 1st Battalion, Northampton County Militia.  Henry was active in the Lehigh (Zion) Church like his father before him.  He was a member of the building committee when the second church was constructed beginning in 1784.   In 1785, he was a schoolmaster of the school at Lehigh Church.

Henry married Anna Margaretha (nee BABEL) Heilig, widow of Henry Heilig, Jr., who had died about 1766.  Anna Margaret was born 1743 and died 9 October 1818 in Macungie Township, Lehigh County, PA, only a few months after her husband’s death.  Anna Margaret had a daughter with her first husband named Anna Barbara Heilig who was born 20 November 1761 and died 1 November 1811.  Anna Barbara Heilig married Heinrich Christman about 1778 and had three children: Johann Jacob Christman (born 1784), Johann George Christman (born 1788) and Anna Margaretha (born 1779).

Henry Knappenberger and Anna Margaret had twelve children.  When Henry died in August 1818, he made provisions for the care of his wife, Anna Margaret, and divided the balance of his estate and possessions among his seven surviving children.

NOTE  Macungie Township was originally part of Northampton County but became part of Lehigh County when that county was formed in 1812.

Henry Knappenberger’s home, built in 1789,
still stands today. The segmental arches
above the windows were characteristics of
the 1780s. The roof was originally cedar shake.
