GENERAL INFORMATION

Jacob Knappenberger, son of John Knappenberger and grandson of Conrad Knappenberger of Westmoreland County, PA, was born 1 January 1814 in Franklin Township, Westmoreland County, PA and died 9 January 1898 in Mason County, West Virginia.  He is buried in Ward-Aten Cemetery in Leon, West Virginia.  Information sent by a family member shows Jacob’s middle name to be Andrew.  He first married Hannah WALTHOUR, daughter of Jacob Walthour and Maria Barbara Knappenberger, on 20 April 1837 in Westmoreland County, PA.  Hannah was born about 1815 in North Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, PA and died April 1850 in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio.  Jacob and Hannah shared the same grandfather, Conrad Knappenberger, making them cousins.

After moving to Ohio and West Virginia, some of Jacob’s family changed the spelling of their name to KNAPPENBURGER – this was not a formal change but he did use “burger” on a number of official documents including his Civil War papers.  While most of his sons reverted to the original spelling of “berger”, one son -Solomon Holt- maintained the “burger” spelling.  Within the descendants of Solomon Holt, some families retained the spelling as Knappenburger while others did not.

Jacob and Hannah moved to Ohio and settled in Jefferson County, Ohio about 1849.  Jacob and Hannah had three children prior to her early death in April 1850.  Jacob then married Elizabeth GOSSETT, daughter of John Gossett and Nancy Crabb, on 6 June 1850 in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio.  Elizabeth was born May 1832 in Jefferson County, Ohio and died 2 March 1916 in  Mason County, West Virginia.  Elizabeth is also buried at Ward-Aten Cemetery.  Jacob and Elizabeth with their children moved to West Virginia about 1857 where they were listed in the 1860 census for Hemlock, Jackson County, West Virginia.  Jacob and Elizabeth had ten children in all.  Elizabeth as a widow was living with her son, Matthias Knappenberger, in the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Cooper District, Mason County, West Virginia.

Jacob was 43 years old when he enlisted and served three years from 1862 to 17 June 1865 with the 11th West Virginia Infantry/Company I as a Private during the Civil War.  More information on his Civil War service is available on the Veterans Page.
